OCC: maybe he meant those OTHER students that lived nearby and does not need to take the train to Hogwarts. they would have arrived earlier.
Well, i'm just guessing...

Narcissa had changed in a hurry at the train, as Bella had pointed out they'd be arriving any minute. The estimation was off by some 20 minutes, but all the same the time flew by for the little girl.

She had been hearing rumors all over the train about the House selection process and honestly, after the third Sphinx theory, she was starting to get a little tense. Her parents had never really mentioned it, just that everyone had been in Slytherin since immemorial times (never mind Andromeda) . Bella had only smiled enigmatically. Sometimes Cissy wished her sister weren't so fond of dramatics.

They stepped down from the train and, as she was about to follow Bellatrix, a loud, rough voice rose from the student chatter:

"Firs' years! Firs' years, follow me!"

Narcissa sought its source and almost fell back as she gazed at the towering figure. Her blue eyes widened in shock, taking in the width of five men and height of two, all turning out to be one gigantic, heavily bearded 'man'. She quickly turned back and gave Bella an alarmed look, silently asking her if it was all right- and if she could be rescued from it. Her sister nodded, not even attempting to hide her scowl at the prospect of having Cissy associate with it. The little girl inquired what to do with her luggage, and the elder Black told her it'd be delivered safe and whole.

A mass of First years swayed her away from her sister, and they parted with one last anxious look.

They were led to a lake and there boarded several boats in groups. Narcissa eyed warily the dark waters, not entirely listening to what the 'man' had to say. Remaining vigilant of the water seemed like a better idea. She had barely registered a possible independent set of ripples on the water's surface, when she heard the thundering voice comment on the likeliness of encountering dangerous creatures.

Was it really necessary to have creatures anywhere near the school's grounds? Fascinating as they may appear in books, Narcissa couldn't help but pale further at the thought of an actual encounter. She looked around and tried to asses the rest of the First years' reactions, trying to discern in the darkness whether everyone was as uncomfortable with the subject as she was. To her surprise, there were several excited faces and eager whispers at the prospect of dangerous creatures.

Fools.

She looked away from the faces, raised her chin and kept her gaze focused on the boat's lantern. Pale skin glowing under the bright moonlight, silky hair billowing in the slight breeze, Narcissa Black took in a deep nervous breath as she marveled at the massive, alight building suddenly before her.

OCC: remember Narcissa is spoiled, sheltered, snobbish AND 11. Almost everything at Hogwarts overwhelms her at first, and kids' imagination runs in different proportions. Their minds are impressionable. It's dramatic to her because she's been taken away from a perfect little world for the first time. It's not about making life less boring, but realistic within the circumstances. Hogwarts is a big deal.
The sphinx thing is not something important. Just a way of narrating how First years (and mischievous upperclassmen) were getting carried away on trying to guess what the Sorting would involve. It could've said 'jumping through fire hoops' for all it matters.

And I didn't mean that Andro was in Slytherin too, but that the House thing was given such an importance, that they forget at times about her not being one too. It happens to the middle child. A lot. hehe But I'll make an annotation so that it's clearer.

ooc : I'm too tired to get technical. Lets cross the damn lake now, shall we?

James 'Prongs' Potter

"Firs' years! Firs' years!"

There was something incredibly warm and fuzzy about this alarming giant of a man. His grizzly beard and immense stature oozed intimidation and yet, James could only think of him fondly almost akin to that of a very huge teddy bear. A rather messy teddy at that.

The ride to Hogwarts had been fun. First, he had met Sirius, who although was quiet at first, had now taken to contemplating with him, ways on how he could smuggle his broom into the castle. Together, they had tried to talk rigid Remus out of his stoic disregard at THEIR disregard to the rules. He relented eventually but warned the both of them not to get him involved and only agreed to help when Sirius called him a coward.

Then a rather bossy girl had come into their compartment followed by a very slimy greasy-haired boy. They were looking for an empty compartment apparently as the others were crowded or too noisy. The girl seemed alright despite her odd affection for the slimy git who had turned his nose up at the lot of them.

It had been fun taunting those two.

Now they were here, beside the lake, getting into tiny boats in threes. James got into one and beckoned to Sirius who followed, along with an awestruck Remus. The three of them stared at the castle as the boats disembarked.

And almost as if on cue, the three of them exclaimed.

"Ooooooooo...."

One last look at Cissy just before they depart. As much as she wants Cissy to be by her side, she too knew Hogwarts rule for first years. Letting Cissy go on her own is not easy for Bella. She feels the responsibility to take care of the younger one. She is the eldest of the sisters, protecting her youngest sister is her obligation. To keep Cissy by her side, giving and 'spoiling' her with whatever she wants, in Bella's terms, of course.

Bella is anxious. She didn't like being disappointed. She didn't want to. After all the bragging about her youngest sister making a proud Slytherin. Her ego would be damaged if Cissy don't end up in the house Bella expect her to be in. Assumption is her strength, yet her weakness too.

She then mets up with Rabastan, and the group, including Evans and Wilkers walk towards the coaches. As the boys talks about their trips during the holidays, Bella looks up at the sky and...

*SIGH*

OOC: The above is actually unnecessary and some could be written in the Sorting Hat topic but I posted it here anyway.

A giant of a man led the convoy of first year students from the Hogwarts Express towards the lake, causing much panic among the much smaller sized students.

Jack paused as he surveyed the scene, hoping to catch a sense a familiar presence. The girl? Lucius? Anyone?

He was feeling a tad uncomfortable being led towards the gigantic lake which he had a feeling involved a tradition of some sort. In Jack’s experience, tradition always ends up overruling logic and safety.

A lake, thought Jack, Why did it have to be a lake?

Noting the absence of Lucius and the girl, he concluded that they were definitely not first year students. But then again, their arrogance betrayed that as well.

Having exhausted any form of curious or even mildly interesting thoughts, Jack shifted his observations to the other students around him, hoping for a distraction from the unpleasant journey ahead.

The boy from wand maker’s shop had found new friends. A tall boy resonating an aura of confidence, and a smaller much more timid boy who seemed to be tagging along and hoping to blend into the background.

The tall one’s false bravado was convincing, but Jack was not impressed, he sensed the underlying lack of confidence and self worth. Eager to prove himself, he thought, easily manipulated.

The timid one was far more interesting. He was anxious, fear dominated his mind. Not fear for his safety, but fear of others. His self control was impressive. This one is careful, Jack thought, yet there was a beast beneath the surface. I must tread carefully.

The boy from the wand maker’s shop was smug. He thought he deserved anything he desired. Full of rebellious energy and the aura of one who knows he is more talented than others like him. Pride, Jack mused. Full of unrealised and potentially harmful pride. He would be easy to use, should the need arise.

Slightly pleased with his observations, Jack’s mood improved. Maybe the lake would not be so bad. This is not the same with the one he crawled out of, barely alive. This is –

“Hogwarts!” boomed the giant. “We’ll be goin’ soon, jus’ wait.”

Smiling ever so slightly, Jack moved towards the boats, glad that it would not be as bad as his last encounter with a large body of water.

“Just one thin’, before we go, kids!” the giant hollered, “Keep yer hands an’ feet within the boat at all times! And watch out for der giant SQUID!”

He was so going to get it now, Severus thought as he and Lily hurried to where the First Years were supposed to go. In their excitement they had both went to check something out at the Station where the Hogwarts Express stopped.

It took them a full 5 minutes before they realized that all the other students wearing blank black ties had left the platform and had gone somewhere. Mustering up all the courage he could and trying to look as dignified as possible, Severus walked up to a senior and asked about the whereabouts of the First Years.

Thankfully he and Lily were not given any grief and were pointed to where they should have been 5 minutes ago.

When they arrived, they saw Hagrid giving final instructions. He tugged at Lily's sleeve and both of them clambered into the awaiting boat, glad that they weren't in deep trouble.

It would not do to start the first day of school with such a bang!
