Remus 'Moony' Lupin
The sheets felt cool and soft as he laid upon his bed; his skin felt the roughness of the material but felt glad to be him--not the beast that comes and tortures. He had absently mindedly sighed, unsure of the reason. Or maybe staring at the peeling paint of his ceiling was enough to draw greater depression upon him.
Remus closed his eyes for a moment, hearing only the soft sounds of the children playing outside, just below his window. Though he was accustomed to it by now, being forced away from others his age for fear that 'it' might show even though they knew 'it' won't--not until a full moon.
Instead, Remus imagined himself playing with them, laughing, and smiling. Everything was just as it should be as if the world hadn't changed or even when the light flutter of wings and a strong coo.
His eyes shot wide open, where his fantasy was interrupted by something unusual. Bolting up and looking all over, he spotted the animal perched on his window sill, staring at him expectantly.
"Hello..." he whispered at the brown speckled owl. The thing blinked once before bowing forward, with what seemed to be a letter in its beak. His heart skipped a beat or even two when there was a sudden realisation on what this might be. His family wasn't sure he'd be getting one, at least not in his case.
Carefully, Remus stepped forward and stretched out his hand to receive the letter. Not intending on holding it back, the owl dropped the entire thing into Remus' palm. He gripped the envelope and nervously glanced at it, reading his name written upon it: "Remus John Lupin", ignoring the address and proceeded to tear it wide open.
Dear Mr Lupin
We're pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. Enclosed with your letter are the list of necessary items you will require in your first year of both books and equipment.
Term begins of September the first. We await your owl no later than July 31.
Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall Deputy Headmistress
He read it three times before realising what it meant for him. It was an escape into something beyond what he had now. He turned back to the owl but it was gone, obviously it had done its duty and now left for home. "Mother! Father!" he yelled at the top of his lungs as he tore down the old creaky stairs, barreling into the living room and finding absolutely no one.
"Remus?" his mother frowned at her son's unbecoming attitude.
"I've got it!" he was still yelling but he couldn't control his excitement.
"Got what?" the tall figure of his father emerged from the kitchen.
Waving the letter like a madman, he held it out to his parents, "Hogwarts! They want me in!"
"Oh, Remus..." his mother broke into a sad smile before looking at her husband.
"No..."
"What?" Remus' heart fell, a sudden knot was forming in his stomach. His father couldn't have said...
"You can't possibly go, Remus," Mr. Lupin added softly but sternly. "What if... that you..."
"Your father's right," Mrs. Lupin added. "You might get hurt, dear."
"You mean I might hurt someone," he snapped back.
Turning his back on his son, Mr. Lupin began to walk away. "You can't go."
Remus looked at his mother, his eyes pleading for her support but he only saw that she thought the same. "This isn't fair," he bit his lip and fought back the tears.
"Remus..." his mother began, but he didn't stay for her comforting words. Instead he left and went back to his room. Slamming the door behind him, he threw the letter aside before lying on his bed again and having to stare at the peeling paint through his tears.

A huge tabby cat sitting on the wall of an extremely shabby-looking house appeared to be very comfortable up there. It had just feasted on a very curious magpie that had insisted on looking extremely juicy as it hopped innocently about the unmanaged lawn of the house and now, it thought that life could not be possibly bliss.
In exactly a minute from now, the owner of the shabby-looking place would open the cat flap on the main door and slide a plate of nice warm milk out. It was done this way to ensure that the cat would not set foot into the house. Apparently, someone at home was allergic to him. No matter, he could always sleep in the shed. It was quite warm in winter even.
The cat sat up a little. Half a minute had passed and it was soon time.
A soft breeze blew around the area. It wasn't altogether a rather pleasant looking village. Most of the houses were rather shabby although even the cat had to admit that it was this particular house that stood out the most. There was a mini tower sticking behind the thatched cottage. It was most peculiar. A mini tower that appeared to be thatched as well.
A few streets, very old street lamps and not many Muggles around the area. The cat supposed it was due to all the wizarding folk around the area. Or rather, that thing that came and ate the kids at night. Or injured them at least.
20 seconds now...
It never harmed him though. He had seen it skulking around and it seemed to recognise him. Or maybe, it just never fancied cat meat.
15 seconds...
The cat decided to get off the wall and make it's way to the porch. It walked slowly, trying not to seem too desperate but with eager anticipation as the thought of fresh warm milk awaiting it.
8 seconds...
It was ready and waiting by the cat flap. So much for not seeming desperate.
5 seconds...
Fresh warm milk. Yum.
3 seconds...
2 seconds left...
1 second now...
POP!
The cat hissed in fright and scampered to the further corner of the porch. An old man had appeared suddenly out of nowhere, upsetting the bowl of milk that had appeared. He looked at his foot. The old man had apparently appeared with his right foot right in the dish of fresh warm milk. Hissing angrily, the cat dashed away.
The old man looked rather odd. Granted, he did not appear to look normal. Clad in long purple robes, with his beard tucked into his belt, he peered from behind his half-moon spectacles at the number on the porch.
"77"
This was it. He rapped on the door three times and someone peered at him from the eye hole. He grinned amicably back.
The door opened. And the old man, who was known as Albus Dumbledore by all from his world, bid the person who opened the door a friendly greeting.
"Good evening Mr Lupin. I've come for young Remus. I trust you all are well?"

Remus 'Moony' Lupin
The house was small enough for Remus to hear just about everything. Except the tiny whispers his parents would so often share. But for those, he had purposely shut out, not willing to hear what they thought of him or his future. Though tonight, there was a different sort of sound that he heard; it was the knocking on the door.
The sharp squeak as it open and then a deep but warm voice spoke. "Good evening Mr Lupin. I've come for young Remus. I trust you all are well?"
With eyes wide open now, Remus discreetly crept out of his room and sat upon the steps where he could see their visitor clearly. The purple robes upon the man was a clear signal of who he was.
"Professor Dumbledore?" Mr. Lupin spoke in quiet astonishment.
"Oh my..." Mrs. Lupin said, but she couldn't be seen from where Remus sat. "Well, do come in," she extended the invitation and walked into Remus' view.
He sat there holding his breath, unsure of what the headmaster of Hogwarts' intention of being here tonight was.

The boy looked rather pale as he sat upon the stairs, eyeing him curiously. He gave the boy a quick wink but that only caused him to move back a little. A pang of pity surged his old heart.
"What would you, er, like to drink, Professor?" said Mrs Lupin, apparently still not over her shock of having him come to visit. He knew his appearance would have been daunting. The couple were having inner turmoil and he had come to make them see sense. Up on the stairs, the boy, having retreated to behind the banister, peered out to get yet another look at him. They retreated to the living room.
"Tea would be fine, but don't you worry yourself about that, dear," he said amicably, conjuring up three teacups, a teapot and a silver tray. The teapot tipped over and filled the three cups and with a flick of his wand, Albus Dumbledore sent the teacups into the hands of the Lupins.
"Now, I have some business to settle with the both of you," his deep warm voice suddenly sounding a little brisk. "It has come to my attention that young Remus here has already received his Hogwarts letter?"
The Lupins looked at each other uncomfortably. A few seconds passed before Mrs Lupin spoke again.
"Ah yes, indeed. He just got it, er, yesterday afternoon,"
Albus Dumbledore took a long sip of tea before he spoke again.
"I assume the both of you must be quite proud. Most parents were. I received countless letters from families such as the Lockharts, the Blacks, why even the Prewetts. Ecstatic they were although I had no part to play in this. Students of strong magical lore gain acceptance into Hogwarts and it is only tradition,"
The Lupins remained silent. Mrs Lupin was staring at the floor, looking as though she wished it would swallow her whole. Mr Lupin was looking everywhere else but at the Professor. Albus Dumbledore was finding this thoroughly amusing.
"I suppose the next step would be to head off to Diagon Alley, to get his books, robes - has he mentioned what pet he'd like to have? Although, I must remind you that snakes are out of the question. Had a viper show up in my office one day. A little stint some of the students found rather amusing, knowing that I don't particularly like them,"
Mr Lupin opened his mouth to say something but probably had second thoughts about what he wanted to say for he shut it at once.
Albus Dumbledore brought a bag. He untied it and handed it to the Lupins.
"Every-Flavour Beans? Watch out for the brown ones. They're not always chocolate,"
Mrs Lupin coughed and Mr Lupin finally decided to speak up.
"He's not going,"

Remus 'Moony' Lupin
Fear suddenly crept up from nowhere, ceasing Remus as he held on tightly to the banisters until his knuckles were white. Part of him wanted Professor Dumbledore to persuade his parents into allowing him attendance at Hogwarts; yet a part of him knew the secret would be then revealed--something his parents have been hiding for so long. He had no idea which side was the stronger wish.
"He's not going," Mr. Lupin repeated, this time his voice more collected and more certain.
To Remus, it was odd how the Headmaster seemed so calm and almost... almost like he knew exactly how his parents would react.
"You see, Professor," his mother stepped forward, wiping a hand on the apron and then tucking one of her long brown curls behind her ear. "Remus is a... delicate boy. You could say he is ill. We didn't think it is wise to send him away from home for so long."

Albus Dumbledore chose that exact moment to let out a huge sneeze.
"Pepper!" he coughed, as the Lupins rushed to him in alarm. "You'd think I'd have learnt by now. But those grey ones somehow always end up in my mouth," He stole a glance at the boy yet again. He seemed to be peering out from behind the banister, afraid, uncertain.
Dumbledore's eyes twinkled.
"My dear, ill?" said Dumbledore, smiling warmly at the both of them. "Surely you know of Madam Pomfrey's excellent healing skills, having been in Hogwarts yourself? There is nothing she couldn't heal, if young Remus here is of ill health, Hogwarts is just the place for him. To heal in the midst of others his age, under the best care the wizarding world could offer him, apart from St Mungo's itself of course,"
Mr Lupin opened his mouth to say something but was cut off immediately.
"You see, Mr and Mrs Lupin, I'm quite aware of your son's illness," said Dumbledore quietly. "And rest assured, I hardly think it a disease but merely an unfortunate circumstance. One that he is hardly responsible for, wouldn't you say so?" He looked questioningly at the both of them.
"Hardly a reason to hinder education, no?" he added, now directing a warm smile at young Remus.

Remus 'Moony' Lupin
The revelation that Professor Dumbledore knew--actually knew--about his curse and not be afraid, struck pure shock through Remus. He would've stood straight and shout out to the elderly man if his own father had not spoken first.
"Professor," he sighed and glanced at his wife, as if seeking her permission to continue, but even if she hadn't given her a nod, he would've defied her and spoken. After all, he was the one who was the wizard; not to mention it was his fault that Fenrir seeked revenge. "As much as it is a relief that you know exactly of Remus' condition but still, the possible dangers it would inflict upon--"
"... the others." Remus finished Mr. Lupin's sentence as he reached the bottom of the stairs. The boy looked from his parents faces, etched with sadness and turmoil, then to the headmaster's soft smile.
"Himself," Mr. Lupin ended, not taking his eyes off his son. "He doesn't recall much when he transforms," he continued though his voice slipped a tone lower. Mrs. Lupin laid a hand on his shoulder.
"We look out for him," the gentle voice of his mother was now heard and Remus looked at her. Slowly, she left the side of her husband and faced Remus. "We're afraid that what if... what if someone finds out--someone who won't understand who Remus is and..." she took a deep breath in. "And hurts him?"
"I don't see an alternative, Professor Dumbledore," Mr. Lupin picked up the debate. "He isn't safe where no one will be able to take care of his needs. It's a school filled with hundreds of people--children no less. It will not be fair for them nor for the parents who find out of Remus' lycanthropy."

Dumbledore stayed silent for a bit, as though contemplating the truth in their words. Moments passed and he still did not say a word. He had closed his eyes and appeared to be deep in thought.
"What does Remus here have to say about this?"
His sudden question took them offguard. The Lupins looked a little blank for a moment. He seized the opportunity.
"Your son, will have to face WORSE than what you're trying to protect him from. I will not lie to you -- yes, a very difficult life awaits him. He won't just have inner demons to fight; he will have to undergo the most painful life's lessons one so young shouldn't have to bear, were things ever in our hands,"
The effect his words had on the Lupins made a mark. But he pressed on. They needed to understand more.
"But there is one thing you should never have to do nor make a mistake of. You most certainly cannot and shouldn't shield him from the world forever. It is punishment, for something he had no control over. You are isolating him rather than teaching him to adapt. And also, giving in to the insecurities he will have to fight within himself,"
He thought he saw young Remus inch in closer at his words.
"Your son, will have so much depth in him, that it would be a shame to take that way from him by indulging in what society's judgement of him would be. By protecting him, you enhance his naivety. By isolating him, you deprive him of education, warmth and the kindness that some in society will have to offer. You instead, indirectly no doubt, go along with society. Protecting his feelings yet making him increasingly more vulnerable. Times change. And cures will be developed. And if not cures, treatment. Do not encourage him to give up when there is so much to live for,"
He paused before he spoke again, this time, in a much softer voice.
"I am offering young Remus here, a chance to lead a normal life. Or at least, a mere attempt at it. By denying him this, you deny him and his destiny. I beg you both, to reconsider this. And let the boy, have his say. Rest assured, his presence in Hogwarts will be my personal responsibility, something I myself will take upon to look out for. His transformations will go unseen. I am, in fact, also in the process of finding a cure,"

Remus 'Moony' Lupin
Whatever wide open space between he and headmaster had was slowly removed as Remus moved closer to the professor. It was the first time anyone had ever asked him what he wanted for himself instead of whatever everyone thought best.
"I am, in fact, also in the process of finding a cure,"
His lips went dry and then he felt like his tongue was stuck to the roof of his mouth rendering him speechless. He turned behind at his parents, all of them held the same identical expression of hope. "I want this," he finally managed to speak, looking from his parents to the professor. "I want to go to Hogwarts."
They all stood there, still in the small confines of the living room, neither of them had even sat down during the entire conversation. Over to his left, Remus saw two of the magically conjured tea cups placed delicately on the small table. Its soft flowers decorated the porcelain white and looking extremely out of place in their dilapidated home.
"You speak the truth then?" Mr. Lupin had collected himself, looking gravely serious. "Remus here will be treated as an equal at Hogwarts? No one will know of his transformation?"
Professor Dumbledore gave a deep and assuring nod.
Cold fingers balled into fists, Remus looked at his father and mother with anticipation--wishing and praying for the best.
"I'm sorry, Professor Dumbledore but I think you should leave now."
The world come crashing down around him; all things lost from him.
"Because Remus will need as much as sleep as he can tonight if he is to visit Diagon Alley for his books and robes. Am I right, son?"
Not believing a word now that the wish had become reality, Remus lost all senses and could only glance around at the smiling faces of the adults. It took him to realise he too was smiling and managed to nod once.
